(1999)
On the very first day of college, there was an awkward gathering of about two dozen classmates on the top floor of the college. No one introduced anybody but a handout of A4 paper was passed around, on which was the title Drawing In the Air.
Then as a group, we watched a demonstration of how to weld metal by a technician. Then everyone again dispersed awkwardly.
For the first time in my life, I had a mission to break up the secret meaning of something encrypted, all on my own. I remember wondering and wandering in and out of mind, but ended up at Tate (now Tate Britain), where the Duveen Galleries were full of David Smith’s work. And that became my library and an inspiration for this work.
