Cornflake (2005), sawdust, approx: 21 x 20 x 3.5 cm
For the weekend of 14th & 15th March 2015 I occupied Mokspace to perform Cash or Smash (2015). I set out a schedule to smash my 450 Cornflakes. These modular works were hand-made during six months of 2005. Smashing at a rate of one every two minutes they would all be smashed by the end of the weekend. However, the public were invited to intervene. I offered the audience the opportunity to either buy one of the modules for 99p or to pay 99p to smash it. The audience were invited in, introduced to the project, and shown documentation of a history of the Cornflake works. Everyone who bought or smashed a Cornflake had their name recorded on a tall, numbered schedule. Red dots accompanied the purchases.
I called this “smashing your way into history” or “smashing your way into art history”.
